Boys Varsity Soccer · Olympus holds on for a 3-2 Semifinal Victory over Wasatch…On to State Final!

It was a cold and damp afternoon at Juan Diego High School for the State Semifinal.  Olympus started the game off quick with a couple close chances, but Wasatch quickly settled in and turned up the pressure by putting the Olympus defense on their heels with a counter attack.  Keeper Ian Jones was solid in the first 15 minutes turning away several shots and denying Wasatch any thought of a quick lead.  Midway through the first half, it was Olympus that found the opportunity to strike on a counter attack with the ball being played through the Wasatch defense and Canyon Czapla capitalizing on a beautiful strike that found it’s way past the keeper’s left side and into the back of the net to put Olympus on top 1-0.  Olympus continued to turn up the pressure with strong play from the midfield and the forwards getting in behind the Wasatch defense for several close chances.  Olympus was finally able to break down the defense with a beautiful ball played in by Din Huremovic to a crossing Hayden Earl, who skillfully tapped it over the Keeper’s reach and into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.  However, it was Wasatch that finished off the half with a set ball 25 yards out that was able to get past Jones to close that gap to 2-1 at the break.

Olympus came out strong in the second half and continued to put on the pressure as Senior Captain Adam Naylor found himself open at the top of the 18 yard box, after another beautiful pass from Earl, and curved a shot passed the outstretched  arms of the keeper for a 3-1 lead.  Wasatch dug in and pushed forward with several opportunities within the last 10 minutes of the game, but it was the defense of Olympus that came up with save after save, and continued to clear the ball out of danger.  Logan Davies came up with the save of the game off a goal line clearance to keep the score at 3-2 when the final whistle sounded.  Final Score Olympus 3  Wasatch 2.  Olympus will play in the State Final on Thursday at 4:30 at Rio Tinto Stadium.  Come and support as Olympus goes for another State Championship!!!!
